ABUJA, Nigeria - A suspected notorious kidnapper who had been terrorizing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its neighbouring states was arrested by the Kaduna State Police Command on Thursday, January 18, 2024, after a gun duel with the police.
The suspect, identified as Chinaza Philip, was later handed over to the FCT Police Command for further investigation. He is allegedly involved in several cases of armed robbery and kidnappings in the Bwari area of the FCT.
Relief washed over residents of Abuja and its environs as news broke of the arrest of Chinaza Philip, a notorious kidnapper who has terrorized the region for months.
Philip, dubbed a "menace" by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, met his capture on Thursday, January 18th, 2024, in a dramatic operation by the Kaduna State Police. Acting on a distress call regarding the abduction of Segun Akinyemi, officers intercepted the kidnappers while they were transferring their victim from Abuja to Kaduna. A brief gunfight ensued, after which Philip was apprehended while three other suspects managed to escape.
According to the Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Umar Muri, the suspect was tracked down by the police after he and his gang members kidnapped a woman and her daughter from their residence in Bwari on January 15, 2024.
The police said they rescued the victims and recovered two AK-47 rifles, one locally made pistol, and 30 rounds of ammunition from the kidnappers.
The FCT Police Commissioner, Bala Ciroma, said the suspect would be charged to court after the completion of investigation. He also commended the Kaduna State Police Command for their collaboration and professionalism in apprehending the suspect.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or persons to the police for prompt action.
"This is a significant victory for our ongoing Operation Safe Capital, and a major blow to criminal elements operating in the region," declared SP Josephine Adeh, FCT Police Public Relations Officer. "We are determined to ensure the safety and security of all residents, and the apprehension of Chinaza Philip is a testament to that commitment."
Akinyemi, thankfully, was unharmed and reunited with his family. However, the case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of kidnapping in Nigeria. While celebrating Philip's capture, authorities remain vigilant in pursuit of the remaining suspects and urge the public to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity.
This article is based on publicly available information and does not imply guilt or conviction for Chinaza Philip. It is intended to inform the public about his arrest and the ongoing fight against kidnapping in Nigeria.
